[he] crossed over to the place where he was to board his boat.  This one and that one, those he knew and those he didn't know, gave him a sendoff.  It'd be those people who attended him regularly over the years who found it hard to say good-bye, and while they were bustling about all the day doing this and that, the night had deepened.
