Tosa Nikki or The ‘Tosa Diary’ is an account of a 55-day journey in the year 935, mainly by boat, from the Province of Tosa back to the capital, Heian-kyō. Its author, Ki no Tsurayuki, had just completed his tenure as Governor of Tosa, but the narrator's persona is a woman in the Governor's service. A vernacular diary, the work helped create a new genre. Its engaged perspective, relating events from within the story, differs in interesting ways from stories told by non-participants.
